DIY 9: 2012 – Call for Participants

A weekend workshop in fabulation. For open minded artists seeking lines of flight. Not for wimps or sceptics.

Project summary:

This two-day training constitutes the intensive re-enactment of selected workshop scenarios, as filtered through the prism of fabulation; employing a range of shared experiences and internal navigation techniques, some of which may hold the potential to lead participants into emotionally choppy waters. It will be assumed therefore that all applicants are internally ‘strong swimmers’.

It is necessary for the purpose of stimulating authentic responses to the content of the workshop that specific details remain undisclosed in advance. However, no particular skills or experience are needed, no one will be expected to run around naked, and everyone will/should get out alive. The principal requirement for participants is open-mindedness, a commitment to group collaboration and a mature approach to engaging with an experiential environment; a supportive atmosphere awaits those selected.

A donation of £20 per participant will be requested to cover workshop material costs and lunch on both days.

Dates, times and location:
Birmingham (precise location within Birmingham tbc)
Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 October 2012, 10am to 6pm daily.

Participants will need to arrange their own travel and accommodation. We are working with Fierce to liaise with local connections in order to provide suggestions and help keep this cost-effective for participants coming from outside Birmingham.

The artist:

Drag fabulist Dickie Beau is a queer clown whose work is informed by a range of traditions, from low culture to high art, in the creation of distinctive performance experiences. The principle shtick for which he has lately gained notoriety is in the use of found sound, which he ‘re-members’ and then ’embodies’ in the fabulation of new narratives. www.dickiebeau.com
