DIY: 2009 – LOW PROFILE – Rachel Dobbs and Hannah Jones What do you do with the leftovers?

A chance to think about and explore the creative potential of the tangents, the unrealised ideas and the leftovers of an artistic practice.

Project summary:

This workshop provides artists with the opportunity to take the time to examine, re-trace, take stock of, and realise the potential of the ‘stuff’ that is leftover from the artistic process of making. The workshop encourages participants to think about the by-products of their practice – the tangents, the unrealised ideas and the leftovers – questioning how to turn the things that have been forgotten about, shelved, or disregarded, into the starting point of new artistic projects/artworks/artefacts/artists’ ephemera. Through an examination of artists’ ephemera and a series of practical exercises, the group will seek to develop simple, low-fi and low-tech ‘transformations’ of their ‘stuff’ – concentrating on the re-presentation of ‘leftovers’ as work in its own right.

Participants will be provided with tea/coffee and free lunches on all 3 days of the workshop. B&B accommodation will also be provided free of charge on the night of Saturday 5 September. Participants will need to arrange and pay for their own travel to Plymouth.

Application procedure:
What do you do with the leftovers? is open to live art practitioners with at least 2 years professional practice, who are keen to work intensively, feel that they sometimes suffer from hopping from project to project and want to spend time thinking about what might be getting lost. There are 8 places. About the artists:
LOW PROFILE (Rachel Dobbs and Hannah Jones) have been working in collaboration to make live art since 2003. They are currently based in Plymouth, UK. They make live work (or performances) and associated ephemera (like bookworks, installations, videos and photographs). LOW PROFILE’s work is about not giving up, the impossible, the endless and the obsessive – their experiences of everyday life magnified and put on show.
