OOZING GLOOP – Sown Up (2017)

Isolated and alone, Oozing Gloop made this piece using a selfie stick and a mobile phone. They then purposely smashed the regulating images within the H.264 compression codec, a new contemporary common that is the foundation of how we see and share images in the online era; to transgress these transgressions and transcend into a chimerical being of light. To show how, when we smash the boundaries between the particular frames, between pixels and moments, and map them upon each other, fantastic and previously inconceivable monsters appear who may inspire new myths, narrations and discourses.
This piece is a study of transgression. Fury at the lack of reaction to the poverty of democratic spirit engendered by an age of austerity. This fury drove Oozing Gloop, to drunkenly, at dawn, re-stage the ultimate transgression and defining point of our current executives operational psyche: “to run through the fields of wheat”. The wheat that narrated and encased his repressed childhood, the wheat that greeted her return at the hands of institutional failure and gentrified displacement. Already much more badly behaved than the current Prime Minister’s “ultimate” articulated moment, the transgression of transgression transcends the initial prohibition and negates/illustrates its negligible nature and how vastly inappropriate/unqualified this leader is to represent us.
As much as people would like too, it seems clear they don’t really give a shit about the Grenfell victims, the death sentences of disabled people handed out by ATOS, or even their own social wellbeing vis-a-vie the revelations of the Panama Papers. We no longer have access to the space by which to share, symbolise and express our grief and rage in a way that might build into a new vision or movement that could sweep aside this contemporary order.
