Glimpses of Before: Study Room Guide and Vox Box Launch

Glimpses of Before is a new Study Room Guide on Performance in the UK in the 1970s. Glimpses of Before, which will be available online, has been compiled and edited by Helena Goldwater and includes information about artists who were making performance in the 1970s, over 100 images and two introductory texts by Helena Goldwater and Dominic Johnson. All the materials referenced in the Guide and an image archive are now accessible in LADA’s Study Room.

As well as launching Helena’s Guide, the evening will also mark the arrival in LADA’s Study Room of Marcia Farquhar’s Vox Box, a jukebox housing a growing collection of 7” vinyl records of recent audio interviews conducted by Marcia Farquhar with friends and colleagues recalling the work of 1970s artists, activists and performers documented in the Acme Gallery archive or otherwise contemporaneous.

Drinks will be served.

Performance and Politics in the 1970s

Glimpses of Before and Vox Box form part of a larger series of research activities on Performance and Politics in the 1970s organised by Dr. Dominic Johnson and Professor Nicholas Ridout, including a day long symposium Performance and Politics at the Whitechapel Gallery, two month-long artist residencies at major arts organisations in East London, in collaboration with the Department of Drama at QMUL. The resident artists were Anne Bean and Marcia Farquhar.  Anne was based in the Foyle Reading Room at Whitechapel Gallery, and Marcia was based in the Archive at Acme Studios.

The project is a collaboration between the Live Art Development Agency, the Department of Drama at Queen Mary University of London and Matt’s Gallery, and is funded by Queen Mary University of London. We would also like to thank ACME studios and all the artists for their generous provision of images for the guide.
