A walk through performance – a workshop to develop original work based on walking performance

Project summary:
This is a four-day workshop on walking performance for up to ten artists.

We will look at the history of walking as an artistic practice, seminal walking performances, and influential artists in the field.  We also observe a public space as the starting point for original work.  By the end of the workshop, you will have an initial proposition for your own artistic piece of work. 

The workshop is open to artists working in all fields of practice: visual artists, musicians, dancers, actors, live artists, performance artists, etc. The only prerequisite for entry is a desire to learn more about walking as a form of artistic practice.  There is no required level of practice.

Participants must cover their own travel and accommodation costs.

The artist:
Nando Messias’ work straddles performance art, dance and theatre.  His performances combine beautiful images with a fierce critique of gender, visibility and violence.  Informed by queer ideology, Nando’s work is known for his meticulous approach to movement, resulting in pieces that are highly skilled and carefully crafted.  He has performed at Tate Tanks, Gate Theatre, Toynbee Studios, Roundhouse, Royal Vauxhall Tavern and ICA, among other stage and gallery spaces in Britain.  Nando’s work has been curated by the Live Art Development Agency as part of the programme ‘Just Like a Woman.’  He has appeared regularly at Duckie, having had a whole evening dedicated to his work in August 2012.  His latest project, The Sissy’s Progress, has received support from Arts Council England, Artsadmin and Dance Art Foundation.  As well as an artist, Nando is also a movement director and an academic of queer theory.
